Types of People who Study Online While travelling

There are many different types of people who study online, and everyone chooses to study for different reasons. Who are you in the online learning world?

As long as you plan ahead, keep to a schedule for school work, and complete all the work on time, you can take a vacation or travel during an online class..

1. The social butterfly

“It is a slang term for a person who is socially dynamic, successful at networking, charismatic, and personally gregarious”

You’re always on the online message boards asking questions and interacting with your teachers and fellow students. You’re a community builder who gets involved and you’re there for an experience. You probably started a Facebook group so you can stay in touch with your online classmates.

Signs you might be a social butterfly:
  • you love a good chat
  • you prefer to talk things out with other people
  • being connected to your teachers and fellow students is important to you
  • you think the study is about more than just the piece of paper you get at the end.

Ways to be a social butterfly while studying

  • Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Take some time to be social by exploring different friendship groups – and avoid the trap of clinging onto the first person you meet out of fear of loneliness.

  • Meet as many people as possible. Go ahead and say hi! Talking to as many people as possible will show you how many cool and interesting people are around you in your new home.

  • Do what you like doing. It’s worth investing your time into activities you know you enjoy rather than changing to fit in.

  • Don’t be afraid to try new things. The saying goes ‘life starts where your comfort zone ends’ and this is particularly true when in a new environment.

  • Embrace the experience. Remember you have an amazing opportunity ahead of you – and it’s up to you to make the most of it.

The Achiever

“They focused on accomplishments and success. Their identities are attached to their achievements. They achieve in order to receive external validation, which feeds their need to feel worthy.”

You get stuff done. When you participate in activities and discussion boards you have great insights and answers, and you’re respectful of other students, too. So what if you’re not overly chatty?

Signs you might be a quiet achiever:

  • you work well autonomously, but don’t mind interacting with others
  • assessments aren’t scary and you generally get good marks
  • your favorite quote is something like, “The best way to do it, does it”
  • you’re happy to be involved in your online community, and you have your eye on very specific goals.

The juggler

You’ve got a number of balls in the air and education is just another to add to your routine. You might want to be highly involved but don’t have the time to interact as much as you’d like. You’re the type of person who generally leaves things to the last minute, sometimes through no fault of your own.

Signs you might be a juggler:

  • your family, work, and social life are quite busy and will take priority over study
  • you need clear expectations and deadlines so you can plan around other commitments
  • when you need something, you want it to be accessible straight away so you can deal with it or get it done
  • you might swing between other online learning personalities depending on what’s going on in life
  • the ability to put your study on hold during busy periods is appealing.

Would I recommend studying while traveling? Absolutely. But here are a couple of tips from yours truly to do it right.

5 tips to be aware of studying while traveling

    1. be aware of the incredible responsibility you now have
To an extent, you’re still spoon-fed while studying on campus. When you’re stating lines away, you’ve got only yourself to remind you of due dates and to push you to hit the books.
    2. it saves you a world of stress when you know what’s coming for you
There aren’t many things that are worse than an unfinished paper hanging over your head when you’re riding a bicycle of exhilaration through a new city.
    3. book your tickets fairly early if you need to fly out for a lab sesh
Fluctuating airfare costs add only worry when you’re trying to focus on memorizing digestive system vocab. Keep an eye out for sales–Tiger and Jetstar tend to have decent ones pretty often.
    4.  take on fewer online subjects than you would while on campus
I found that I learned a little slower than I did when I was in an environment dedicated to learning. Plus, you want the time to explore the new world outside your door.
    5. don’t be too hard on yourself
This is new to you, and you’re going to trip up. Just be sure to brush yourself off and learn from where you went wrong.

Traveling while studying was one of the most rewarding experiences you’ll ever have. You will learn a crazy tonne of stuff about yourself, and while it was hella stressful at times, it pushed the boundaries of what I thought I could do. Plus, getting a degree while watching a sunset or while eating your fave foodies isn’t too bad.
