The white sandbar and clear sea views of this island are not only beautiful but also relaxing. You will forget everything as you imagine yourself in paradise. Are you the type of person who loves the beach? The island is sparsely populated and located off the south-western coast of Culion – offer a truly tranquil experience complete with long stretches of white sand beaches, forested knolls, and postcard-perfect waters. It is a really gorgeous island with a kilometer and a half long stretch of white sand beach.
Most tour groups around town offer packages going to Malcapuya Island. It is usually packaged with Bulog Dos and Banana Island and is located 2 hours away from Coron town and harbor.
If you are the type of person who just loves spending time under the sun doing nothing but gets a perfect tan, then Malcapuya island Coron is definitely for you.
Malcapuya Island Coron
We both found this annoying to be forgotten about and have no tour guide assisting us. We decided to go back to the boat in search of help. When we found our tour guide we were told where to find our group and were then reminded that we only had 20 minutes left to see the island.
That’s pretty annoying because it was not our fault why we arrived late (almost 12 noon). So I did what a paying customer should do… I called the owner of the tour and explained to her the situation. She decided to book a few cottages to have lunch on the island. The cottages, in keeping with the island feel, are made of light, indigenous, and natural materials.
Stunning Views of Malcapuya island Coron
Once we had located our group and settled into the cottage, we were finally able to truly appreciate the beauty of Malcapuya Island. A large strip of white sand with a background of palm trees. It looks stunning, natural, and wild. The summer sun and the rolling waves washing across the crisp white beach sand… It’s the kind of scene you only get in movies.
The sand up near the cottages and resting areas is a mixture of sand and stones. A few more steps than the sand becomes white and powdery soft. Then, once in the water, it becomes a mixture of pure soft sand with bits of stones.
Compared to other white sand beaches we have visited; this one is quite large but the turquoise water against white sand is what really sets Malcapuya Island apart from the rest – It is literally like something from a postcard. Needless to say, there are many good snorkeling spots in the area.
Our tour guide told us that a baby shark had been spotted in the area not long ago – I don’t know if it’s true. Malcapuya Island beach is long and wide so overcrowding is not really a problem. The beach-line in the area is quite rocky but still offers a great picturesque view.
At the leftmost end is a cliff overlooking the rest of the islands including Bulog Dos and Banana Island. Other tourists climbed the stairs that lead to this magnificent viewpoint. Because we were still on the limited time, we only had enough time for a few drone shots and a quick swim before lunch was ready.
There are also some basic hammocks and cottages with electricity that depends on generators. You can find outlets in the cottage where you can charge your phone and camera batteries. Few meters away from the cottages are two restrooms with open-air showers. Tables and chairs are also available for lunch and snack breaks. It’s the perfect beach getaway. Some tourist spends the night here. I forgot to ask about the rates.
There are no hotels nor inns on the island so I guess camping is the only option. There’s an island fee of P200 per person who visits but this was already included in our tour.
What’s there to do in Malcapuya Island Coron? The guide said there is a snorkeling area but I did not dare go as it looked too far and the waves a bit strong. Some tourists settled under the shade of coconut trees (our group took a nap in the cottage).
While waiting for our tour guides to prepare lunch, Gary and I walked to the rightmost end, quiet spot of the beach which is less frequented by tourist so he can use his drone video to see the beauty of the island. Despite the extreme heat, I went into the water briefly.
We scurried out when I got stung by something. Haha. Among all the islands I’ve been to in Coron, Malcapuya struck my heart the most because of its very calm, beautiful waters and sand. Don’t get me wrong, the other islands are as beautiful and have unique appeals but this one just happens to be my favorite spot.
After Lunch
After lunch, some of our group treated themselves with refreshing coconut juice which cost P50 while resting under the coconut palms. There’s a small sari-sari store on the island where chips, drinks & beer are sold.
The only downside of Malcapuya Island Coron is some trash we saw on the beach. How can some local tourists do this? You come to a place to admire its beauty and yet you destroy it? I’m pretty sure they are local tourists because foreigners won’t eat that local junk food. I wish the caretakers of this island would be stricter. And this place won’t be destroyed by mistakes. And with tour operators, don’t be surprised with delay, broken equipment, and general incompetence. They are there for your money, not your enjoyment.
Checking the weather is a must if you plan to visit the island. The coast guard will not allow guests to travel to Malcapuya Island Coron if the wind is heavy because the outrigger boat will have to cross the open sea to get there. Travel time should take almost 2 hours due to strong winds and whopping waves.
Our boat was leaning from left to right and up and down. It was a challenge for some of us, but it was all worth it when we got to Malcapuya. It’s an island that will not only guarantee powdery sands and crystal-clear water but also a stunning view of the islands surrounding it.
